Representative Roy Dyson (D - Maryland) speaking on voting history and Reaganomics. (I don t think it would have made any difference which way) I voted on any issue. I believe as a member of Congress, you have to be prepared to go out and defend your position. If I voted with Tip O Neill in some of those instances, I would have had to go out and explain to people, This is why I this way. In the case with, I believe, in the case with supporting the President on some of the budget cuts and on the tax cut, it was basically in the favor of the majority of the people in the first Congressional district. There was this sense that we ought to give the President a chance.

Let me tell you a bit about what I do there. We approve or disapprove every expenditure of money over about $400,000 for every facility in the country. And of course, that s very important here in the first district. And it s very important because if they want to relocate Patuxent Naval base, they at least have to get an okay of the majority of the members of that committee, which they won t get.

Representative Roy Dyson (D - Maryland) There is a tremendous joy in helping people. Believe me, this government is huge - and you can imagine, I get frustrated with it sometimes. What about the guy down the road here, whether it s his workman s compensation case or whether it s his mother-in-law can t get Social Security check or what it is? When those letters come in, or in my case, I see those people because I m home every night, my district is so close to Washington, and they say Thank you for helping. And almost in a sense you beat the government too.
