Chemical Warfare Tests by U.S. Military in WW2: Part of U.S. government film on military chemical warfare. Tests of "CK" gas (Cyanogen chloride, blood agent).
Animal Field Tests: MS goat tied to a tree wearing a Japanese issued gas mask as a cloud of poisonous CK gas is dispensed, the poor goat struggles and thrashes about as gas cloud fills the air, its gas canister is being penetrated ultimately killing the creature. CU canister attached to tree. MS dead goat. Narrator explains that gas is being tested for 'canister-breaking' potential, and that "the Japanese canister proved to be the poorest one tested." GV military dugout as soldier wearing gas mask rolls up the "gas proof" curtain, he proceeds to enter the dugout and removes a dead goat from inside. Narration explains that the CK gas penetrated the "gas proof" curtain and broke the Japanese issued gas mask canisters killing the test goat. MCU man taking a US issued gas mask off a live goat. Narration explains that the latest U.S. canister is able to resist CK .
Day Field Tests: GV/MSs men loading & firing CK filled ammunition in 4.2 inch chemical mortars. Night Target Test: darkness, can see some flashes as the mortars are fired. Narration explains that they encountered problems keeping the mortars in position due to movement in the soft ground. Day MS man pointing at where ammo has reached target range; "even with the mediocre performance of mortar mounts, highly satisfactory results were obtained. "
Map and diagrams illustrating the range of concentration in impact area - an area in which concentration is 'canister-breaking' and size of the lethal area (which "would kill a Jap whose mask leaked"). Interior GV/MSs group of military officers seated around table, looking at and discussing data of CK tests; Narration explains that CK is an effective agent in the jungle and that considering the relative abilities of Japanese and American gas masks , it is considered that even if the Japanese have the new gas, "its use by both sides would be to our advantage."
Animal Field Tests: MS soldiers tying up 3 goats in the forest- -one is wearing a U.S. mask, one is wearing a Japanese mask and one is unprotected w/out a mask. Various LS/GV/MS as the gas is released and gas cloud blankets the area, as the cloud dissipates we can see the unprotected goat and the goat in "jap" canister are killed, the goat in U.S. mask is still alive. Narration explains that the surviving goat was placed in veterinary hospital for 3 days for observation, with no ill effects seen. CU of live goat standing there next to dead ones.
Field Test: LS the target which is a ship's hulk w/ 2 barges moored to stern to equal the length of Japanese battleship. GV as tug approached target ship with goat test subjects. Various MSs as gas concentration sampling instruments are set on site. MSs as two goats, one w/out mask and one goat with Japanese Navy gas mask canister are placed on target ship. GVs unmasked goats being placed on ships 800 ft from the primary target.
Field Test: GV U.S. B-24 bomber on carrier as bombs are wheeled across deck. U.S. B-24 bomber on carrier. Air to air of bombers going to drop gas bombs. POVS from plane of bombs dropping. LS bombs hitting all around the "ship". Gas cloud totally covers target.
Field Test: Various shots of military personnel going back onto ship, finding both dead and live goat in crate. Narration explains that all unprotected goats both on main target and on 'guard boat' were killed. 30% of masked goats are killed. They determine that this sort of attack is feasible as a preparation attack, to neutralize A-A fire. Various aerial / LSs explosions & bombs dropping on target ship.
