Going after that problem, saying if you, the private citizen of America, believe that handgun violence in our society is a problem, you re going to have to put up some of your money to do something about it.

He is the spokesman for the National Rifle Association on many issues in the United States Senate. I think we need to remind Senator McClure that he not only represents his own state, but he is a Senator of the United States. And the majority of Americans have made it very clear over the past two decades that they want strong gun control legislation.
Senator James McClure ( R - Idaho ), says he is proud to be praised by the NRA because he agrees with them. I am proud of the fact that the so-called gun lobby and I are in agreement. Because I happen to believe they are right. They happen to believe I m right. I m proud of that connection. I m not at all ashamed of it. The majority of people in my state agree with the position that I ve taken.

One of the first contributions to my opponent two years ago was over $10,000. Constant mail to people saying I was trying to take away their rights to have arms. When all I was asking is that police records be checked before someone is given a gun. Money talks. When you know someone is going to write a $10,000 check to your opponent because you support reasonable handgun control, you hesitate.

If we have the kind of impact we think we re going to have on the Dangerous Dozen, then the Congress is going to listen to us next time when we go in and say the people want something done on gun control.
