Vietnam Comment: Johnson And DeGaulle State Opposite Views
At the American Legion Convention in Washington, D.C. , President Johnson takes a firm stand on United States policy in Vietnam. He warns that the war there could lead to a Red Chinese-encouraged series of wars. Meanwhile, President DeGaulle, on a world tour, repeats his stand that U.S. troops withdraw from Vietnam to promote peace. Bands, Color Guards and Drill Teams march down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.. The streets are lined with parade enthusiasts. CU of a Drill Team passing in the parade. MS of the parade in process including a marching band from Mexico. The Capitol Building. CU of the American Legion logo. Inside the District of Columbia National Guard Armory , Legionaires gather to hear the President speak. MS President Lyndon B. Johnson standing at the podium. MCU President Lyndon Baines Johnson: "Make no mistake about the character of this war. Our adversaries have done us at least one great service. They have described this war for what it is in unmistakable terms. It is meant to be the opening salvo in a series of bombardments or as they are called in Peking, "Wars of liberation." And if it succeeds in South Vietnam than as Marshall (?) says and I quote him: "The people in other parts of the world will see of what the Vietnamese people can do, they can do too." Unless we have the imagination to understand what is happening in the world, we may very well find ourselves together with all of our friends among the highly developed nations; but facing a series of explosive crisis in which our military involvement is urgently at issue. The Great Montreal to New York Canoe Race
The Province of Manitoba beats Alberta in the Great Montreal to New York Canoe Race. Ten, six-men canoes cover the 470 mile journey to publicize Canada's World's Fair "EXPO '67" as part of the Canadian Centennial. The paddlers are Eskimo, Indian, and Canadian woodsmen. In Montreal Canada, at St. Helen's Island the ten six-men canoe teams start the 470 mile race to New York. CU of the men paddling. CU of the George Washington Bridge as the men paddle under it. The Hambletonian
At the Du Quoin State Fair Grounds in Illinois, 25 thousand racing fans see "Kerry Way" take the Hambletonian in two straight heats. He sets a new world record for total time with Polaris" in second place. The Harness Racing Classic has a 122 thousand dollar purse. CU of Retired old men watching the race. MS Horses and jockeys parading on the racetrack. Hambletonian racing fans, a few with binoculars look at the race. MS Car driven down the track with the starting gate. The horses are trotting behind as the gate drops and they're off. CU of a man with a pair of black binoculars. MS Horse, Kerry Way, leading in the back stretch as crowds are brought to their feet. Kerry Way wins the first race. Smiling female fans wear sunglasses and sundresses in the stands. MS Horses are behind the starting gate once again for the second race. Horses race around the turn. Racing fans stand up as the horses come around the bend. MS Kerry Way is speeds up racing down the middle of the track with Polaris to her left. Kerry wins the Hambletonian by a neck with Polaris coming in second. Fans smiling and apploud still wearing their paper hats. MS Kerry Way is walked slowly on the track with her jockey. CU News Media taking pictures. CU Kerry Way and Jockey Frank Urban, age 62, standing by the rose draped winner . Kerry Way's time from both heats is 3 minutes 58 and 2/5 seconds and a new world record.
Nature's Treasure: Potash Boom In Canada
NO AUDIO A modern breakthrough in the discovery and mining of "Potash" occurs in the prairie Provinces of Western Canada. Some 5 billion tons are discovered there. Potassium from Potash is vital to plant and animal life, business, industry and the Space program. LS Several Farmers harvesting wheat from farm fields with combine tractors in Saskatchewan, Canada. Animal Almanac
No Audio! At Catskill Game Farm in upstate New York, children and adults flock to feed all kinds of animals which roam openly. Llamas, deer, goats, camels along with some other three thousand animal species also are here. At the Dallas Zoo, we meet baby gorillas "Vicky" and "Mickey. MS An area where families can interact with live deer, elk, sheep and llamas. Children feeding deer, elk, sheep and llamas. CUS A smiling toddler reaching to feed or hug a llama. CUS A five year old boy hugging the neck of a llama that's laying down. A sheep sniffs a pre-teen boy in search of food. MS A little child feeding a camel a cracker he or she doesn't want. Water Ski Championships
The best water skiers in the country compete in the National Championships at Christopher Lake, Miami, Florida. Slalom, jumping and tricks are the major events. High speeds and spectacular spills feature this four-day whirl. MS People are picnicking under trees dressed comfortably and getting ready to enjoy the water skiing competition. High Angle Shot - Male competing in the slalom skiing, he cutting deep into the water making some high waves. Zig Zagging back and forth cutting over the wake of the speed boat. MCUS - Waterskiing fans enjoying the competition and the sun. MS - Nice clean jump off the ramp. He takes on the next jump and gets plenty of height but takes a bad fall face first. MS - Waterskiing fans watching this competition with intensity. MS - Another competitor takes on the jump, and he leans forwards too much and looses control. His legs spread apart with and he loses his skies as he lands in the water.
